The Rising Tide of Immigration
Interactive Slide Lecture
Overview
This Interactive Slide Lecture introduces students to the period of greatest immigration to the United States (1865–1915), an era that set the stage for the industrialization and urbanization of America. In this activity students explore the causes of this great immigration, the circumstances under which immigrants came to this country, and the immigrants’ living and working conditions. Students will also investigate the changing nature of this wave of immigration and the attitudes encountered by the immigrants when they arrived in America. Students will accomplish this by viewing and interacting with a series of ten transparencies.


Materials You Will Need to Teach the Activity
Any student handouts, overhead transparencies, student information, or placards mentioned in these procedures are available by ordering the United States History to 1900 Sampler.

Objectives
Students will be able to
• describe the experiences of turn-of-the-century immigrants during their journey to, and arrival in, the United States
• describe the living and working conditions of immigrants around the turn of the century
