Lesson 3:
Here are sites for both teachers and students that provide more information about demography and migration of peoples to the United States.
United States Population and Demography
The U.S. Census Bureau - Teachers will find this site very useful in developing overviews of the population of the United States. The QuickFacts section of the site provides a brief breakdown of various aspects of the population of the United States as a whole as well as by individual state.
Native Americans
Arctic Journeys - This interactive site from PBS is an electronic field trip to the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. Students and classes can play the role of archaeologist by taking the Artifact Challenge, become investigators in Searching for the Past, and learn about the history and culture of the area.
European Americans
Ellis Island - This outstanding site from The History Channel re-enacts the immigration process. Students use an on-line tour of the processing center to relive immigration, with audio and video segments to add to the experience. Students choose a place of origin and follow their fate.

Ellis Island - This is the home page for the museum on Ellis Island, which offers general information about the famous immigrant processing center. Students can search the Wall of Honor for relatives or see basic information about the museum.

Ellis Island: Through America's Gateway - Created by Mount Carmel High School, this site provides a great deal of information about the journey of immigrants and the inspection process they went through.
Asian Americans
Chinese Immigration to the United States - This site from the Library of Congress provides some primary source material about Chinese immigration to the United States and the reactions these immigrants met here.

Angel Island: Immigrant Journeys of Chinese Americans - This is a private site that contains some oral history about the experience of Chinese immigrants at the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay.
Latin Americans
The History of Hispanic American Immigration - World Book offers this site that provides an overview of Mexican immigration to the United States. The text-based site is divided into subtopics, including immigration in the early 1900s. This site is part of a larger Cinco de Mayo site.

The Borderlands Encyclopedia - This web site from the University of Texas - El Paso is a collection of articles and multimedia links detailing various issues of the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of the interviews with immigrants should be of interest to students.
African Americans
Africans in America - This incredible PBS site has a wealth of material on the African American experience in America, including the forced migration of Africans to the present-day United States before the 20th century. Images and primary sources make this site a must-see for students and teachers.
